Voting by mail is not as complicated as you might think. There are only a handful of steps:

  • Request your mail-in ballot by the deadline.
  • Receive your mail-in ballot via USPS.
  • Return your mail-in ballot by the deadline.

New Jersey vote by mail rules

  • New Jersey will send every registered voter a mail-in ballot for the November 3, 2020 election.
  • You can still a request a one-time ballot if you will be away from home during a specific election.
  • For the November 3, 2020 election, all counties will have at least 10 mail-in ballot drop off boxes.

Your signature on the return envelope will be compared to the signature on your voter registration card to ensure they match. If you forget to sign the return envelope, your ballot might be rejected.


New Jersey vote by mail directions

  • New Jersey will automatically send a mail-in ballot to every registered voter for the November 3, 2020 election.
  • If you need to update your mailing address permanently, register to vote again using your new mailing address.
  • If you need to update your mailing address temporarily -- because you will be out of town for the November 3, 2020 election -- request a one-time absentee ballot.

Receive and return your mail-in ballot

  1. Carefully read and follow the instructions, and fill out all required fields.
  2. Sign and date the outside envelope.
  3. Mail or hand-deliver your ballot to your Local Election Office. You can also hand-deliver your ballot to a state-provided dropbox. You can use our Find Out Where To Vote tool to find an official dropbox.
  4. If you mail your ballot, it must be postmarked by November 3, 2020.
  5. If you hand-deliver your ballot, it must be received by November 3, 2020.
  6. If you miss the deadline – or forget to sign the outside envelope – your vote will not be counted.
