Massachusetts voter registration rules

To register in Massachusetts you must:

  • be a citizen of the United States
  • be a resident of Massachusetts
  • be 18 years old by Election Day (you may pre-register if you are 16)
  • not be temporarily or permanently ineligible to vote because of election crimes
  • not be under guardianship with respect to voting
  • not be currently incarcerated for a felony conviction

Register to vote online in Massachusetts

  • You must include your Massachusetts driver's license number or Massachusetts state ID number with your online voter registration application.
  • Visit the Massachusetts online voter registration tool.
  • Fill out all the required fields.
  • You will be registered to vote as soon as you finish the workflow.
  • You should receive your voter registration card in the mail within 2-3 weeks. If not, you might want to follow up with your Local Election Office.
  • The deadline to register to vote online is received by October 24, 2020.

Register to vote by mail in Massachusetts

  1. Download and fill out the National Voter Registration Form.
  2. Box 6 - ID Number: Enter your Massachusetts driver’s license number or the last 4 digits of your social security number. If you have neither, write “NONE” in the box.
  3. Box 7 - Choice of Party: You may register with a party. Members of political parties may vote only in their own party's primary elections. Voters who choose not to enroll in a party and members of political designations or minor parties may vote in the party primary of their choice.
  4. Box 8 - Race or Ethnic Group: Leave blank.
  5. Print, date, and sign the form. If you do not have a printer, you can print the form out at any local library. If you do not have a stamp, you can buy one from any grocery store: just ask the cashier to sell you one.
  6. Mail your voter registration form to the mailing address below. For faster delivery, send the form directly to your Local Election Office.
  7. Your voter registration form must be postmarked by October 24, 2020

Register to vote in person in Massachusetts

  1. Contact your Local Election Office to find where to register to vote in person.
  2. Massachusetts voters must provide their Massachusetts driver's license number, state ID number, or the last four digits of their social security number with their voter registration application. Voters must also physically show a valid document with their name and address, such as their driver's license, bank statement, or utility bill.
