Connecticut voter registration rules

To register in Connecticut you must:

  • be a citizen of the United States
  • be a resident of Connecticut and of the town where you want to vote
  • be 17 years old. You can vote when you turn 18.
  • if convicted of a felony, have completed confinement and parole. If you have been convicted of an election related crime, you cannot vote until you have completed, prison, probation, and parole.
  • not currently be declared mentally incompetent to vote by a court of law

Register to vote online in Connecticut

  • You must include your Connecticut driver's license number, learner's permit number, or Connecticut state photo ID number with your online voter registration application.
  • Visit the Connecticut online voter registration tool.
  • Fill out all the required fields.
  • You will be registered to vote as soon as you finish the workflow.
  • You should receive your voter registration card in the mail within 2-3 weeks. If not, you might want to follow up with your Local Election Office.
  • The deadline to register to vote online is received by October 27, 2020.

Register to vote by mail in Connecticut

  1. Download and fill out the National Voter Registration Form.
  2. Box 6 - ID Number: Connecticut Driver's License Number, or if none, the last four digits of your Social Security Number.
  3. Box 7 - Choice of Party: Connecticut has a closed primary system. You must register with a politcal party if you wish to vote in that party's primary elections.
  4. Box 8 - Race or Ethnic Group: Leave blank.
  5. Print, date, and sign the form. If you do not have a printer, you can print the form out at any local library. If you do not have a stamp, you can buy one from any grocery store: just ask the cashier to sell you one.
  6. Mail your voter registration form to the mailing address below. For faster delivery, send the form directly to your Local Election Office.
  7. Your voter registration form must be postmarked by October 27, 2020

Register to vote in person in Connecticut

  1. Contact your Local Election Office to find where to register to vote in person.
  2. You must provide your Connecticut driver's license number, state ID number, or the last four digits of your social security number with your voter registration application. You must also physically show valid ID, such as your driver's license or birth certificate.
